Bec Stevens

Bec Stevens is an Australian sculptor based in Melbourne, working under the name Art by Bec. She makes original wall sculptures, sculptural lamps and vessels — each one built by hand, one at a time, and never reproduced.

Every fold is placed by hand. Nothing is cast, so no two works are alike.

The practice

Her work began with furniture — building one-off pieces and working across concrete, timber, precious metals and paint. That grounding in making things that have to physically hold up is still visible in the sculpture: these are objects with real weight and structure, not decor.

What the work explores is movement held still. The forms are taken from fabric — a ribbon caught mid-turn, a drape frozen as it falls — and the interest is in the contradiction of it: something that reads as soft, but is rigid enough to hang on a wall for decades. Softness and structure, in the same object.

How the work is made

Each piece is formed by hand and then finished by hand, in a frosted matt, a pearl, a gloss, or a hand-painted metallic. Because none of it comes out of a mould, the fold pattern of every work is particular to that work — which is why pieces are named for their finish rather than numbered.

Some of the work is not solid at all. Several pieces are translucent, and a small group of them are lit from within, so the same object is a sculpture in daylight and a light source at night.

Where the work has appeared

Bec's sculptures featured on Channel 7's My Reno Rules, and have been shown at The Birdcage during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, at Art to Art, and with Eliya the Label. Pieces have been collected by Laura Dundovic, The Real Dads of Melbourne and Melbourne House Spotters, and hang in private homes across Australia.

Acquiring a piece

Works are sold directly through this site and ship Australia-wide from Melbourne, internationally on request. Because each is one of one, availability moves — roughly a quarter of the catalogue is available at any time, and once a work sells that form is gone.
